Guided by the Grain
Creating a piece from scratch is beautiful, and it can be even more impactful when it is sustainably made. Throughout this process I was guided by the grain as I created pieces from a cut down tree. My materials consisted of previously cut down trees on my college campus in Ithaca, NY.
I was inspired to create a table because of the way it can showcase the rings and life of the tree. Not only did I want to show the rings, I wanted to use the legs as an opportunity to show the vertical grain as the grows upward.
My final design consisted of a smooth top and textured legs. I chose to turn the smooth sides of the wood inward so that the rougher sides could show and contrast the top. Although there is contrast, it is still cohesive as they both showcase the grain of the tree from which they came from.
